The Union Hospital Child Development Center, located at 1729 North 6th Street , was created to provide full day child care services for Union Hospital Health Group employees, supplying their children with a progressive, educational and nurturing program. Additionally, the center was designed to enhance the recruitment and retention of Union Hospital Health Group’s most valuable asset - its employees.
Today, we offer that same excellent care to the families in our community.
In 2001, the program received the Indiana Business Child Care Award from the Department of Commerce for outstanding Contributions to the health and livelihood Hoosier Families and the workforce.
Our Staff
Our teaching staff consists of professional, well-qualified individuals in the field of Early Childhood, Child Development or Education who were chosen specifically for their nurturing qualities and high teaching caliber. All staff have passed a National Criminal History check, are CPR and First Aid certified and trained in Safe Sleep and Child Abuse/ Neglect detection and prevention.
Since the program can only be as good as its staff, it is important that they are listened to and respected in their professional capacity. We also encourage them to continue to grow in both their personal and professional lives.
Our Curriculum
A progressive, educational program has been planned for each age group so that a love for learning will be enhanced and uninterrupted. The center’s philosophy toward learning is “Provision, not Pressure”, and we believe that children learn best through play, teachable moments and teacher-structured activities to provide continuity and exploration. The center uses the Creative Curriculum, a reliable and valid curriculum that has a multicomponent framework based on child development and learning theory. It focuses on interest areas in the environment and serves as a blueprint for staff in planning and implementing a developmentally appropriate program.
Our environment is safe and attractive, designed to stimulate creative thinking and freedom of movement. Although we believe that the parent and child’s home environment is the most influencing factor in the child’s life, our philosophy is to partner with the parent to make the transition from home to school easy and smooth.
We have an “open door” policy which welcomes parents and families to visit the center at any time.
State and National Rankings
The center is licensed by the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration, Division of Family and Children.
The Child Development Center also ranks a Level 4 in the “Paths to Quality” State Rating System for childcare in Indiana, the highest level attainable. Participation in the PTQ gives Indiana providers reward and recognition as they demonstrate commitment to continuous quality improvement of their early learning programs. It also provides parents with a method to make informed childcare choices.
In 2005, the center earned national accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children. NAEYC is the nation’s largest organization of early childhood educators. This status remains current today with the center earning reaccreditation in 2010, 2015 and 2020.
