Reducing hospital readmissions and improving quality of life
The portable ultrasonic Nebulizer (also known as the "pocket neb") uses a high frequency oscillation method to turn liquid medication into breathable particles. These portable and extremely quiet devices have respiratory therapist's hopeful of improved results in proper dosage, better management of patient illness and reductions in hospital readmissions.
Traditional home nebulizers, which use compressed air to deliver medication, also improved patient outcomes, but patients often say that they are bulky and require a power outlet to operate. To address these concerns smaller more mobile units entered the market and have been growing in popularity.
In 2017, Union Health began the COPD Education program in order to reduce hospital readmissions. Respiratory therapists from Union Hospital work with each patient to determine respiratory triggers that can reduce breathing disorders like chronic bronchitis and emphysema, the two most common conditions that contribute to COPD. The new program has shown early success, but there were cost issues for many patients. Even though the pocket nebulizer is considered affordable, the cost of the nebulized medicine can add up quickly, especially from patients who are living paycheck-to-paycheck. "We have seen several patients reduce their required dose in order to save money, which can easily disrupt their treatment" says Jimmy McKanna, Union Health Manager of Respiratory Therapy.
The handheld nebulizers are not currently covered by most insurance carriers, which has prevented many from enjoying the benefits of accepting medication through a portable unit. To address this concern, Union Health Foundation has helped by funding 100 introductory models in 2017 to help offset the initial cost for patients. McKanna says "The program is brand new and we are just beginning to track patient progress, but we expect to see positive results in proper dosage, better management of patient illness, reduction in hospital readmissions and an overall improvement in quality of life."
