On January 15, 2020, Union Hospital achieved Magnet Recognition – the highest national honor for nursing excellence. Today, Wednesday, January 31, 2024, Magnet champions, nursing and hospital leaders and other staff gathered in the Clinical Resource Center at Union Hospital for the submission of the Magnet® redesignation document! This redesignation includes Union Hospital Terre Haute, Union Hospital Clinton and Union Medical Group.

“The community sees us as one entity, one brand,” Amy Allen, Director of Clinical Education said.  “So, having this designation represent each corner of Union Health would mean a lot. It means that the community knows we truly are united on every front when it comes to patient care and that is really important.”

Magnet® is a designation held by approximately nine percent of hospitals across the United States and even fewer internationally. Clinical staff across the Union Health system have set and achieved goals around patient care, patient satisfaction and employee satisfaction for years.

The Magnet Recognition program® was developed by the ANCC (American Nurses’ Credentialing Center), the world’s largest and most prestigious nurse credentialing organization. It recognizes health care organizations that demonstrate the highest quality patient care, nursing excellence and innovations in professional practice. According to the ANCC, Magnet designation benefits consumers by identifying hospitals with superior clinical care and quality patient outcomes. The four-year credential is one of the highest honors a health organization can receive.

Magnet was developed in 1990 and provides a roadmap for excellence. Magnet status highlights an environment that supports delivery of excellence in patient care, staff nurse involvement in evidence-based practice and decision making in support of optimal patient outcomes.

Union Health anticipates a site visit later this year and a redesignation decision by early 2025.
